3 Fun and Education Home Science Experiments to Do with Your Kids:
Create a Funky Lava Lamp
The 90s are back in fashion and what’s a better way to pay homage to the groovy trend than with a lava lamp? Not only will your kid’s new lava lamp act as a fun addition to their room but they will learn about how different molecules work with one another too.
What You Will Need:
- A clean plastic bottle with smooth sides
- Water
- Oil (preferably vegetable oil but mineral or baby oil does the job too)
- Fizzing tablets (Alka Seltzer works wonders)
- Your food coloring of choice
The first step in creating a funky lava lamp is to fill the plastic bottle to 1 quarter full of water. Then it’s time to pour the vegetable or baby oil into the bottle until it’s almost full. To avoid any mess, it’s best to use a spout or funnel.
When the oil and water have eventually fully separated, it’s time to add in the choice of food coloring. This step is particularly fun to do as your kids can watch as the color sinks through the oil and mixes with the water.
To achieve the famous blobby lava effect, break your fizzy tablet in half and place it into the bottle. Switching off all of the lights and using a flashlight to fully appreciate the lava comes highly recommended at this step.
Make a Rainbow Fizz
This experiment is particularly fun for kids of a younger age. If you have kids who are in preschool, this one is strongly advised.
What You Will Need:
- Baking soda
- Food coloring of your choice (the more the better!)
- Water
- Mixing bowl
- Vinegar
- A syringe or eye dropper
The first step in this science experiment is dying the baking soda. This step is the trickiest part and it’s good to get it out of the way first. Dying your baking soda will require scooping 4 big tablespoons of the powder into a bowl. Next, add 2-3 drops of your food coloring to the mix and slowly pour a little bit of water into the bowl – a teaspoon should be plenty. Then, all you have to do is mix your concoction together. The trick is to have a clumpy substance of baking soda but not have it fully soaked.
Now, it’s time for science to get to work. After you’ve mixed your rainbow colors, it’s best to set them alongside one another in a baking tray. Next, your child can have endless fun using their syringe to inject vinegar into the mix. They will love how the bubbles start to form and to see their rainbow come to life.
Grow a Balloon Inside of a Bottle
One of our top science experiments is seeing a balloon inflate inside of a bottle. The inverted balloon experiment is fascinating to watch and your kids will love getting to know how different elements work in new environments.
What You Will Need:
- A narrow-necked glass bottle
- 1 tablespoon of water
- 1 Balloon (only 1 balloon per bottle is needed but if you have multiple kids, it’s best to stock up on these)
- Oven mitts
- Funnel
To start the experiment, your child should pour their 1 tablespoon of water into the glass bottle with the help of a funnel. The funnel will help keep this playtime clean and fuss-free.
For the next step, adult supervision may be needed as it requires using hot surfaces. Take the glass bottle and place it in the microwave for one minute or until the water starts to boil. If you don’t have a microwave, using a pot of water on the stove with the glass bottle inside works perfectly. As the bottle will become very hot, you will have to use oven mitts to remove it from the boil.
Now that you have your boiling water, take your balloon and stretch its mouth over the bottle opening. The balloon should be perfectly centered for this experiment to properly work. As the steam starts to condense back into water, it will create a different pressure causing the balloon to become inverted.
